  1. Top Quality Intercom

Posted by Peter Roberts on 6th Mar 2012

We recently changed our Harley Ultra Classic Glide, with its wired intercom system for a Street Glide (no intercom!). So, what we needed was a robust, reliable intercom for driver-passenger communication. Several members of our H.O.G Chapter had Scala G4 intercoms so that seemed a logical choice until I heard their complaints - fiddly buttons, VOX not working reliably, noise etc.

So, after much research/ reading all the reviews (perhaps re-discovering the wheel!), I jumped off the fence and ordered the Sena SMH10 from Motorcycle Tourer. The price was competitive, the service was excellent, I could track the order and it arrived within a couple of days.

The Sena instruction manual is clarity itself and, after charging the modules, I had them set up and paired to each other and my iPhone in minutes. Then, out on the Glide to test them - brilliant. No wind noise, not a missed word, and the "jog wheel" is a cinch to use. Any significant reservation - just one and that is, without a hub (in development by Sena?) I can twin with my iPhone and also listen to all my music, but my wife can't. She'll have to pair her headset with her own phone. Not a real problem, as the bike has its own radio/aux input and speakers.

Overall, a great buy. Some of the Chapter guys are looking to the arrival of the Scala G9 (communication between 9 riders). However, I guess basically it depends on what you want to get out of a particular system. For us, needing primarily rider to passenger communication, using a module that can easily be controlled when wearing thick winter gloves, it's just perfect.

  2. Excellent product

Posted by R Pilcher on 27th Jan 2012

I recently bought the Sena SMH10 twin set as I was after a bike to bike intercom in order to stay in touch with my father when were out and about.

I did loads of research before parting with my hard earned cash, and went for the Sena as it seemed to get good reviews elsewhere. The reported ease of use was also a big factor as my father is not good with technology, and I had visions of him struggling with all the buttons and features of the Cardo unit, which I’d also considered.
The service from Motorcycle-Tourer was excellent and I'm pleased to say I was very impressed when my order arrived as promised.
With the Sena you get a real feeling of quality, and it's very satisfying to genuinely receive two of everything, chargers, fitting tools and cables.
The units are indeed very easy to setup and I was able to fit them without any problems to our Shoei multitech helmets.
Many of the prior reviews I read also mentioned that the speakers were very good with this product, and I can confirm that the volume and clarity is excellent.
As a caution point I could imagine that you’d feel the speakers if your helmet doesn’t have predefined pockets as they are quite large, but for me this was not an issue.

At the time of writing this I’ve not covered a lot of test miles, but can confidently say that thus far I am extremely pleased, and would recommend the SMH10 to anybody considering buying one.

  3. Pretty good

    Posted by 321Go on 27th Jan 2012

Solid construction and easy to use while riding.
Easily pairs up with phone and GPS and does what it says in the instruction blurb.
However, be advised that it isnt 100% compatible with all bluetooth devices. EG: i get the first word from the directions missing from my Tom Tom Rider. 'Turn left' becomes 'n left'. I emailed Sena and they said that nothing can be done. Also i use an iphone, and it works fine, but the jog dial can not control the music as stated [ff or replay or pause] using the cable connection. I cant comment music control via bluetooth. The intercom functionality is yet to be put to the test.

  4. Great Tool

Posted by Rob on 27th Jan 2012

Just bought this bluetooth intercom system a few weeks ago and is working very well. My girlfriend Anna has just passed test and i wanted a blue tooth system that would make our rides a bit more fun and safer. They are easy to install and have a good battery life, I am currently testing to see when my charge drops but so far I havent even re charged them after quite a few rides. They are easy to use and dont destract you whilst driving and great when one rider misses a turning and you can quickly put things right when your out for a ride. They work generally better at closer distances and have no problem if one bike is 4 or 5 car distance's behind which is all I was ever asking for anyway. I bought one because I read that they were getting better than when they first came out and previous systems weren't very good and these latest models were sorted. I have to confess I use them just for their bike to bike intercom facility and also with a mp3 when on my own so I haven't bothered to try the telephone on them or other features but I am happy with with them and think they are a great tool.

  5. Very Impressed

Posted by Richard on 27th Jan 2012

Over the passed few years my daughter Emma and I have done several long distance motorcycle challenges for various charities. Emma navigates, I pilot. We started by chance using a cheap intercom system bought on a whim from Lidl. This worked well enough but being only battery powered did'nt last long. Our next step up was a wired stereo system that could be plugged into the bike's auxillary ports. Again it did the job but we found we were losing time at the breaks having to unplug then re-plug. So after talking to other riders on the events, bluetooth seemed to be the way to go.
After rummaging around on the net I came across the Senna SMH10 which received several excellent reviews. So I ordered one from Motorcycle Tourer which promptly arrived a few days later as promised. Setting it up was a breeze following the clear and precise instruction manual. Don't know what the neighbours thought as my wife and I walked around our house with our helmets on talking to one another from several rooms.
The real test came a few weeks later. A charity 1000mile challenge for the RBLR. Emma directs me using her TomTom or route maps. Shortly after we set off she had to turn her volume down. Too loud, even at a constant 70mph.Just before the halfway point we both heard bleeping, the units were running low on power, we had been riding for over 9 hours. but there was no real lose of sound. At the next break we plugged in the optional power leads. Two hours later at our next break we took the leads out as the was now enough charge , which lasted for the the rest of the challenge.
So all in all, an excellent product well worth the money. The only thing we did'nt try out was the Ipod or the phone connections.
